11th Annual Indy Winter Solstice

Experience the Magic of Winter Solstice

Indianapolis area congregations come together in an earth-affirming celebration of the return of the Light

While many are caught up in the hectic pace of the holiday season this time of year, Indianapolis area congregations and community members are preparing to honor the return of the Light on the longest night year. The 11th Annual Indy Winter Solstice Celebration is a family-friendly, earth-affirming event—the only one of its kind in central Indiana–that will be held on Saturday, December 19, 7 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd Street, Indianapolis. The event is free, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The celebration is based on the Winter Solstice Singing Ritual by Julie Forrest Middleton and Stasa Morgan Appel. This non- denominational, family-friendly event weaves together readings, stories, choir, and congregational singing for an evening ranging from the meditative to raucous, all deeply powerful and joyous. It is more than a performance, it’s more than a worship service.

It is a feast of sound and spirit.

This year, the Solstice Choir is conducted by Pam Blevins Hinkle, former conductor of the Indianapolis Women’s Chorus, and director of the Spirit & Place Festival. Marg Herder provides original music with sanctuary and altar design by local artists, Stephanie Lewis Robertson, Kate Oberreich, and others.

Since 2010 the solstice team has also presented the celebration at the Indiana Women’s Prison. This important ministry provides a critically needed religious alternative, and building bridges to incarcerated Christian women who have sought conversation—in and outside the prison—in order to better understand the value of religious plurality.

The Indy Winter Solstice Celebration is a collaboration among Central Indiana Unitarian Universalists—All Souls Unitarian Church, Heartland Unitarian Universalist Church, Oaklandon Unitarian Universalist Church, Sacred Path Church, Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, and Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Hendricks County—along with JourneysFire Spiritual Center, CircleWebWorks, and Zemlin Photo.
